Tom Holland – What you need to know about the latest Spider-Man

Continuing the story of The Avengers, Spider-Man: Homecoming will be out in July this year following on from the events of Captain America: Civil War. Civil War saw the introduction of a new Spider-Man to our screens, this time portrayed by emerging star, Tom Holland. But where did Tom Holland come from? How did he get noticed by Marvel to play such a big role in the movie world? Let’s find out!

On the surface, Tom had a relatively ordinary childhood, attending a school in Wimbledon and then moving on to Wimbledon College. It was when he started to attend the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology in 2012, which gave him a path to succeed. With an impressive selection of notable alumni, the school has a proven track record. From singers like Amy Winehouse, Adele, Jessie J and Kate Nash, to actors like Robert Emms, Emily Head and of course Tom Holland. The school would add to the skills that Tom already had from his time in Theatre.

From 2006 to 2010, Tom would be in West End plays, most notably in Billy Elliot the Musical. This time period was when Tom really started to turn heads, giving his first TV interviews and meeting the Prime Minister at the time, Gordon Brown. His regular stand out appearances as Billy would last until 2010, after finishing his time in the role. He would then move onto movie roles.

Tom’s debut in cinema would come in ‘The Impossible,’ which he got a lot of popularity from. He won 4 awards, including Breakthrough Actor and Best Leading Young Actor in a Feature Film. He was also nominated for a further 3. Not bad at all!

In Civil War, Tony Stark would recruit Peter Parker for his cause after learning about his unique abilities. His big entrance would come in the form of snatching Captain America’s shield away from him using his web, followed up with a ‘Hey everyone.’ This scene in particular was nominated for a Teen Choice Award, the ‘Scene Stealer’ award! It was definitely memorable.

His portrayal of Spider-Man in Civil War, as well as his other work in Theatre and movies, earned him the BAFTA Rising Star Award this year. He joins a list of successful actors like John Boyega, Tom Hardy and James McAvoy, who have all had amazing careers. Things are only looking up for Tom!

Spider-Man: Homecoming will follow on from the events of Civil War, and it will be based on Peter Parker trying to balance life as a high school student with being a superhero. You could even say that it is similar to Tom in real life, balancing school and theatre life. It will have appearances from Avengers favourites, like Tony Stark and Captain America, hopefully it will be a great watch!

Post Spider-Man, Tom is confirmed to have a role in 3 more films, ‘The Current War,’ coming out this year, Avengers: Infinity War in 2018 and lastly the sequel to Spider-Man in 2019. There will be many more to come!

Overall, it is safe to say that the Spider-Man franchise is in safe, capable hands. Tom Holland has worked his way up from starring as Billy Elliot in the theatre, to having great performances in feature films, to box office hits. He has an exciting career ahead!
